Product image specs: what each marketplace requires

Every marketplace has specific requirements for product images beyond just pixel dimensions. This article covers file format, aspect ratio, background, and size limits for the major platforms so you can configure your Dropmatico export correctly.

Amazon

Amazon requires the main product image on a pure white background (#FFFFFF). The product should fill at least 85% of the frame. Minimum dimension is 1000px on the longest side for zoom eligibility. Dropmatico ships a 2000x2000 preset which meets the zoom requirement comfortably.

  • Accepted formats: JPEG, PNG, or TIFF (use JPEG or PNG export in Dropmatico)
  • Max file size: 10 MB
  • Recommended: export at 2x scale for retina zoom clarity

Shopify

Shopify supports square product images up to 4472x4472 pixels. The Dropmatico preset is 2048x2048, which balances quality and load speed. For hero banners, Shopify recommends 1800x1000 to fill the full-width slideshow.

  • Accepted formats: JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF (use JPEG or WebP for product shots)
  • Max file size: 20 MB per image
  • Use lossy compression for faster storefront load times

Etsy

Etsy listing images should be at least 2000px wide. Square images work best because Etsy crops to square in search results. The big shop banner is a wide 1600x400 format. Use lossless compression if your product has fine texture detail like jewelry or fabric.

  • Accepted formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF
  • Max file size: 1 MB for shop icons, no hard limit for listings
  • Recommended: export product listings as JPEG for faster listing loads

eBay

eBay requires a minimum of 500px on the longest side, but recommends 1600px for best results. White or light backgrounds perform best in search. The store billboard is a long landscape format (1280x290) for your shop header.

  • Accepted formats: JPEG, PNG
  • Max file size: 12 MB
  • Use lossy compression at default quality for optimal listing performance

Flipkart, Myntra, Meesho, Ajio

Indian marketplaces generally require white-background product shots. Flipkart and Meesho use 1000x1000 square images. Myntra uses a taller 1080x1440 portrait format for fashion listings, with a separate 3000x3000 high-res zoom. Ajio uses a 1117x1400 portrait format.

  • Accepted formats: JPEG, PNG
  • Use lossless for fashion detail, especially on Myntra high-res zoom
  • Export at 1x scale. These marketplaces do not benefit from retina scaling.

General best practices

Regardless of marketplace, a few rules apply across the board.

  • Always use the largest preset available. Marketplaces can scale down, but they cannot scale up.
  • Use JPEG for standard product photography. Use PNG only if your product sits on a transparent background.
  • Use WebP for platforms that accept it (Shopify, Google Business) for 25-30% smaller files.
  • Use lossless compression when product texture or fine detail matters. Use lossy when listing speed matters.
  • Export at 1x unless the marketplace supports zoom (Amazon, Myntra). In that case, 2x gives sharper zoom-in.
